Storm water drain is an infrastructure designed to drain excess rain and ground water from surfaces such as paved streets, car parks, parking lots, footpaths, sidewalks and roofs. Storm water drains vary in design from small residential to large systems.
Storm water drains receive water from street gutters on most motorways and other busy roads as well as towns in areas with heavy rainfall that could lead to flooding and coastal towns with regular storms. Even gutters from houses and buildings can connect to the storm water drain.
Many storm water drainage systems are gravity sewers that drain untreated storm water into rivers or streams- make it unacceptable to pour hazardous substances into the drains.
01. Drainage systems may have many different features including waterfalls, stairways, balconies and pits for catching rubbish.
02. Drainage systems are usually in PVC.
03. Most storm water drains either go into a storm water drain or to the kerb channel. Can potentially be run to soak pits or storage tanks.
Storm water drains are often unable to manage the quantity of rain that falls during heavy rains and/or storms. When storm drains are inundated, basement and street flooding can occur. Unlike catastrophic flooding events, this type of urban flooding is the primary cause of sewer back-ups and basement flooding which can affect properties repeatedly.
Clogged storm water drains also contribute to flooding by the obstruction of storm drains to stop ponding or flooding into yards.
Main way to tell if you are having this issue is if you notice a large puddle or pool of water by the drain after a storm, bigger sign would be water running back into your home.
